Where to Stay in Kerala: Choose Your Base Before You Book

Kerala Tea Plantations Winding Hill Road
Kerala backwaters, misty hills and a sandy beach

Kerala Pages · Stay guide

Beside a backwater canal, a passing boat might stir you before breakfast. Above a tea valley, mist can hide the view you booked, then lift while you pour your coffee. Near the sea, you hear the surf before you open the curtains.

Each setting promises a different morning. The address determines what happens next.

That canal-side room may need a boat transfer. The hillside balcony may put dinner a long drive away. The sea-view guesthouse may stand above the beach, with several flights of steps between your door and the sand.

Choosing where to stay in Kerala starts here: picture the day you want, then find a base that makes it easy to enjoy.

Start with an ordinary day

Before comparing rooms, imagine leaving one.

Can you walk out for breakfast? Will someone collect you for an excursion? Would you rather spend the morning on the property, with nowhere else to be?

Without a car, nearby restaurants and dependable transport may matter more than a sweeping view. For a couple seeking privacy, meals on site and a secluded terrace may make a longer transfer worthwhile. For a family, separate sleeping spaces and an early dinner can matter more than either.

Set a few priorities before opening the map. Then resist adding a new base for every attraction. Each move takes time: packing, checking out, travelling and settling in again. Fewer moves leave room for the afternoon you did not plan.

Kochi: heritage streets or a convenient connection?

Heritage buildings along a shaded street in Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi suits travellers who want sightseeing to begin at the doorstep. Historic buildings, places of worship and cafés give a short walk shape and interest. Some older buildings now house restaurants and visitor accommodation, making the stay itself part of the neighbourhood’s appeal.

A central guesthouse, homestay or heritage hotel can work well for exploring on foot. Check the route from the actual entrance to the places you want to visit. “Fort Kochi” on a listing does not tell you whether breakfast is around the corner or a ride away.

Mainland Ernakulam may be more practical when a railway station, work commitment or onward journey shapes your stay. Choose around the specific connection you need; mainland addresses vary considerably in convenience.

For a late flight or early departure, weigh an airport-area overnight stay against the journey to your preferred city property. Ask for a realistic transfer estimate for your arrival or departure time.

Choose Fort Kochi for: heritage surroundings and walks between meals.

Consider mainland Kochi or the airport area for: a stay built around a particular connection.

Munnar: look beyond the balcony

A photograph can show you the valley. It rarely explains the drive to dinner.

Accommodation around Munnar ranges from rooms near town to properties scattered across the hills. The destination name tells you little about the journeys involved. Pallivasal, for example, is a separate hill village outside Munnar town.

Stay near town if you value restaurant choices, shops and access to transport. Check recent reviews for road noise and the outlook from your room.

Farther out, the property may become the reason for the trip. A balcony, good meals and time to watch the weather move across the hills can justify the distance. Plot the address against your planned outings before booking: winding roads can make places that look close on a map feel much farther apart.

Families should check the routes between rooms, restaurants and other facilities, especially where steep paths or steps are involved. Without a car, establish how transfers and local taxis work.

If walking through tea country is part of the appeal, ask where you may go. A plantation view does not include permission to enter the estate.

What matters most: the balance between time at the property and time spent travelling from it.

Alappuzha or Kumarakom: how do you want to spend time on the water?

Houseboat bedroom with a view over Kerala’s backwaters

Alappuzha, also called Alleppey, is a useful base when boat trips anchor your plans. But a town hotel, beach guesthouse and canal-side homestay offer very different days. Confirm your cruise’s boarding point before booking a room nearby.

Kumarakom sits on the eastern banks of Vembanad Lake. A lakeside stay can suit travellers who want water in view throughout the day, with outings arranged around long stretches at the property.

Look closely at individual addresses in both places. Neighbouring buildings, boat traffic, road access and nearby restaurants will shape your stay more than a broad promise of backwater tranquillity.

Houseboat, resort or village homestay?

A houseboat makes time aboard the main event. Before paying, confirm the vessel, boarding point, route, cruising periods and overnight mooring. Establish whether you are booking the whole boat or a room on a shared vessel.

Meals, dietary arrangements, air-conditioning hours and boarding access deserve as much attention as the bedroom photographs.

A lakeside resort gives you a fixed base, room to move around and the option of a separate boat trip. It can work well if you want time by the water while keeping your evenings flexible.

A village homestay may offer closer contact with hosts and meals by arrangement. Ask who lives on site, which spaces are shared and how you reach the entrance. The final stretch could involve a narrow lane, footpath or boat transfer.

Book a houseboat when you want the hours aboard. Choose a land-based stay when you want more freedom to come and go.

Varkala: trace the route to the beach

In Varkala, a sea view and easy beach access are separate attractions. Accommodation on the cliff stands above the shore, so the route between room and sand deserves a close look.

A stay near the North Cliff restaurant area may suit you if you want meals and evening activity nearby. Ask about neighbouring venues and music if quiet nights matter.

For travellers with limited mobility, families with pushchairs or anyone carrying heavy luggage, request a precise description of steps, gradients and the nearest vehicle drop-off. “Beach access” is too vague to settle those questions.

Farther from the restaurant area, check where you will eat and how you will return after dark.

What matters most: the walk you will make several times a day, including the climb back.

Mararikulam: a different coastal rhythm

Mararikulam, near Alappuzha, offers a beach-and-village setting for a slower coastal stay. Its appeal centres on the shore and surrounding village landscape.

Check dining options and transport around the property you are considering. If you expect to eat most meals on site, give the menu and meal arrangements proper attention.

Wayanad: map your outings first

A winding hill road through green tea plantations

Wayanad is a district, not a single resort town. Its main centres include Kalpetta, Vythiri, Sulthan Bathery, Mananthavady and Meppady. A listing described simply as “in Wayanad” leaves a great deal unanswered.

Mark your main outings, arrival point and onward route before choosing accommodation. Then compare the journeys from each shortlisted address.

A town hotel or guesthouse can suit travellers who want restaurant choices and everyday services nearby. A rural homestay or resort may work better when the property itself is a large part of the holiday, with a few outings close at hand.

Ask about the final approach road, suitable vehicles and transfer arrangements. If a listing offers “nature walks”, find out where they take place and whether a guide or separate permission is required.

Choose one area and explore it at an unhurried pace. Repeated drives across the district can swallow the time you came to spend outdoors.

What matters most: proximity to the places you will actually visit.

Bekal: give northern Kerala its own time

Bekal, in Kasaragod district, offers a northern coastal base with beaches and a fort overlooking the sea.

Consider it when northern Kerala fits your route and you have time to settle in. A resort may suit a holiday spent largely on site; a smaller hotel or homestay may work well for exploring and eating out.

Check the address carefully. A property described as “Bekal” may sit near the fort, beside a particular beach or elsewhere in the surrounding area. Establish the route to the shore, nearby dining options and transport from your arrival point.

What matters most: choosing Bekal as a base you have time to enjoy.

Choose the accommodation as carefully as the destination

Accommodation labels suggest a style of stay. Ask how it works in practice.

A homestay may offer host contact, shared spaces and meals by arrangement. A guesthouse may give you a more independent room-based stay. Find out who is present and what help is available.

A hotel can be useful for reception support and a central address. A resort may offer grounds, activities and several dining options. Confirm which facilities will operate during your dates and what costs extra.

A serviced apartment can give families or longer-stay visitors separate living space. Check kitchen equipment, housekeeping and laundry arrangements.

For privacy, ask whether entrances, balconies and outdoor areas are shared. For families, distinguish connecting rooms from rooms merely near each other. Have essential arrangements confirmed in writing.

Before you book

A good room should make the day easier. Check the details that will affect yours:

  • Location and arrival: Confirm the entrance, final approach, parking or drop-off point, and help with luggage.
  • The room itself: Check the category, bed configuration, occupancy, bathroom and view. Make sure the photographs show what you are booking.
  • Meals: Establish what is included, serving times, dietary arrangements and alternatives nearby.
  • Comfort and access: Ask about air-conditioning, hot water, steps and lifts along the routes you will use.
  • Recent reviews: Look for repeated comments about maintenance, noise, access and service.
  • The full cost: Include taxes, meals, extra beds, transfers and compulsory charges.
  • Cancellation terms: Read the deadlines, deductions, date-change rules and refund conditions.

If one feature makes the booking worthwhile—a private terrace, a step-free room or an uninterrupted view—get written confirmation of it.

Choose the morning you want. Then follow the day through: breakfast, an outing, the journey back, dinner. The right base makes those ordinary moments feel easy, leaving you free to enjoy the place you came to see.
