Kerala State Textile Corporation Limited (KSTC) is a public-sector textile company owned by the Government of Kerala. It operates several textile / spinning / weaving mills in the state, engaging in yarn and textile production under government oversight.
History & Legal Status
KSTC was incorporated in the year 1972. It was set up as a fully owned subsidiary of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC). Its purpose was to set up and run textile mills in the State of Kerala.
Initially it took on responsibility for multiple previously-private textile mills (for example, Alagappa Textiles Ltd. (Kochi), Parvathy Mills Ltd. (Kollam), Vijayamohiny Mills Ltd. (Thiruvananthapuram), and Kerala Lakshmi Mills Ltd.).
Units & Operations
KSTC runs a number of textile mills / units across Kerala. Some of the units under its management include:
- Prabhuram Mills – a spinning-mill unit with ring-spindle capacity.
- Komalapuram Spinning & Weaving Mills – a spinning & weaving mill, having specific installed capacities e.g. 18,240 ring spindles plus weaving looms.
- Kottayam Textiles – located at Vedagiri, Ettumanoor, with specified spindle-capacity (24,956 ring spindles) under its configuration.
- Edarikkode Textiles.
- Other units include ‘Hi-Tech Weaving Mills’ and ‘Malabar Spinning & Weaving Mills’.
KSTC also maintains a testing / research facility called the Centre for Applied Research & Development in Textiles (CARDT).
Objectives & Activities
The corporation’s mandate is to operate / revive textile mills under Kerala’s public-sector framework. It has also undertaken modernisation schemes at some of its units like Prabhuram Mills and Kottayam Textiles as part of efforts to improve performance.
Newer units or expansions have been added over years: spinning & weaving mills (Komalapuram), weaving mills (Hi-Tech), and new textile-printing / dyeing facilities are referenced under its units profile.
Scale & Reach
Being a state-owned entity, KSTC’s operations span multiple locations in Kerala. Its mills serve production for yarn and textile materials within the state; it likely supports local and government-linked textile / uniform / fabric supply demands via its mills.
Two of its mills (such as Prabhuram Mills) are reported to produce yarn used in government school-uniform programmes.
Kerala State Textile Corporation Limited is a government-owned textile-production organisation in Kerala. Established in 1972 under the aegis of KSIDC, its mandate has included revival / management of textile mills, ongoing production of yarn and fabric via multiple units, and investment in modernisation and testing / research support (via CARDT). Its operations contribute to textile-industry infrastructure within the state and potentially for government schemes like school-uniform yarn supply, while engaging with legacy-textile infrastructure and evolving new facilities.
