Malabar Cements Limited (MCL) is a government-owned cement manufacturer based in Kerala. The company was incorporated in April 1978. The Walayar plant was commissioned and began production in April 1984. Originally created to help meet shortages of cement in Kerala, it makes use of limestone from deposits in the Walayar reserve forest.
Operations & Capacity
The company’s main manufacturing facility is at Walayar in the Palakkad district of Kerala. It operates a captive limestone mine within the Walayar reserve forest, which supplies raw material to the plant.
As part of expansion, there is also a clinker-grinding unit at Cherthala in Alappuzha district. The Walayar plant’s capacity is listed at 6.6 lakh metric tonnes per annum, with the Cherthala grinding unit adding 2.0 lakh tonnes, for a total installed capacity of 8.6 lakh tonnes.
Market Role & Reach
MCL supplies cement within Kerala, aiming to deliver “factory-fresh” cement across the State within 12 hours of manufacture, so as to minimize strength loss from moisture. Its products are marketed under several brand names such as ‘Malabar Super’, ‘Malabar Classic’, ‘Malabar Aiswarya’ and ‘Malabar Vega’.
The company produces a portion of the State’s cement requirement—on one page described as contributing about 6-8% of Kerala’s demand.
Manufacturing Process & Quality
Malabar Cements describes its manufacturing process in terms of raw-material handling, grinding clinker with gypsum, and secondary blending such as use of fly ash or slag to produce PPC/PSC (Portland-Pozzolana Cement / Portland Slag Cement). The company emphasises pollution-control, environment responsibility and meeting regulatory standards.
Growth & Future Direction
Malabar Cements signals plans for expansion and increased market share. Potential proposals include capacity enhancement at Walayar, modernization of mills, setting up new grinding facilities, use of alternative fuels (e.g. pet coke) and new ancillary infrastructure like Ready-Mix Concrete plants.
Standout Attributes
- It is the only Portland cement manufacturer fully owned by the state government in Kerala.
- Its production infrastructure includes captive raw-material mining and large-scale cement-manufacturing capacity.
- The company emphasises delivering fresh cement quickly across Kerala to preserve quality.
- It holds recognized quality certifications (ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015).
- It has established multiple product brands targeting various structural and market demands (e.g. coastal-exposure concrete, high-strength concrete).
Malabar Cements Limited plays a key role in Kerala’s infrastructure and construction sector by manufacturing and supplying quality cement under state-ownership. Its integrated plants and ambitions for capacity upgrades position it as a strategic supplier for governmental and private construction alike within the State.
